Google Business Profile: A Step-by-Step Setup Guide for Local Businesses
When someone searches “dentist near me” or “best biryani in Dubai Marina”, the map results at the top come from Google Business Profiles. A complete, verified profile is free and is often the single biggest source of local customers.
1. Create or claim your profile
Go to business.google.com, search for your business name, and either claim the existing listing or create a new one. Use your real business name, exactly as it appears on your signage. Adding keywords to the name breaks Google’s guidelines.
2. Choose the right category
Your primary category matters most: “Dental clinic”, “Indian restaurant”, “Plumber”. Add a few secondary categories only if they truly describe what you do.
3. Address or service area
If customers visit you, show your address. If you travel to customers (cleaners, plumbers), set a service area and hide the address.
4. Verify
Google may ask for a phone code, an email, a video showing your premises and signage, or a postcard. Your profile only appears fully once verified, so complete this step quickly.
5. Fill in everything
- Hours, including holiday hours.
- Phone number and website link.
- Services or menu with prices where possible.
- A clear description of what you do and the areas you serve.
- At least 10 real photos: outside, inside, team, work.
6. Keep it active
- Ask every happy customer for a review and reply to every review.
- Post updates or offers occasionally.
- Answer questions in the Q&A section.
- Keep the name, address and phone identical to your website.
