Small Business Websites in the UK: A 2026 Checklist
UK customers research online before they call, book or buy, and many judge a business by its website within seconds. Beyond looking good, a UK business website also has a few legal basics to get right. Here is a practical checklist.
The legal basics
- Company details: limited companies must show their registered name, company number, place of registration and registered office address on their website. A footer line is the usual place.
- Privacy notice: under UK GDPR you must explain what personal data you collect through forms, bookings and analytics, why, and how people can contact you about it.
- Cookie consent: non-essential cookies (analytics, advertising) need the visitor’s consent before they are set, with a real choice to refuse.
- Clear terms if you sell online: prices including VAT where applicable, delivery, returns and cancellation rights.
This is general information, not legal advice. If you are unsure, check with an adviser or the ICO’s guidance for small businesses.
What brings UK customers in
- Google Business Profile: verified, with the same name, address and phone as your website. Essential for “near me” searches.
- Service and location pages: a page for each main service and the towns you cover, for example “boiler repair in Croydon”.
- Real reviews: show genuine Google or Trustpilot reviews. Never write your own.
- Fast mobile pages: most local searches happen on a phone.
What turns visitors into customers
- A clear button at the top: book, call or request a quote.
- Online booking for appointments, with reminders to cut no-shows.
- Prices or “from” prices, so customers know what to expect.
- Quick answers after hours through booking or a chat assistant.
Common mistakes we see
- Cookie banners that load tracking before anyone clicks “accept”.
- Contact forms that silently stopped working months ago.
- Out-of-date opening hours that differ from Google.
- Slow, heavy themes that are hard to use on a phone.
