Do I Need a Website If I Have an Instagram Page?
Many small businesses start on Instagram, and for good reason: it is free, visual and great for being discovered. But at some point most owners ask: is Instagram enough, or do I need a real website?
What Instagram does well
- Showing your work, products and personality.
- Reaching new people through Reels, hashtags and shares.
- Quick conversations in DMs.
What Instagram cannot do
- Bring you Google traffic. When someone searches “dentist near me” or “web designer in Queens”, Google shows websites and Business Profiles, not your Instagram posts.
- Take proper bookings, orders and payments in a way that is easy for customers and organised for you.
- Be yours. You do not own your Instagram account. Algorithm changes, a hacked account or a ban can cut you off from your customers overnight.
- Look established to every customer. Larger clients, corporate buyers and older customers often expect a website before they trust a business.
The best setup: both, working together
- Instagram gets attention and builds trust with your content.
- The link in your bio sends people to your website.
- Your website turns that interest into a booking, an order or an enquiry, and captures their contact details.
- Your website also brings in people from Google who have never seen your Instagram.
When Instagram alone is fine
If you are testing an idea, selling a few items to a small local audience, or you are fully booked through referrals, Instagram can be enough for a while. Once you want steady new customers or to stop managing bookings in DMs, a website pays for itself.
Start simple
You do not need a huge site. A fast one-page website with your services, prices, reviews and a booking or contact button already does most of the work. You can add more later.
